Make sure to dribble properly. Don't use your palm to dribble, but use your fingertips instead. This helps you to control the ball better. Also, dribble off to the side instead of in front. The ball should bounce no higher than your waist. Look up and never down at the ground.

Make sure to practice your layups whenever possible. In a typical game, up to four-fifths of all shots are layups. Whenever you practice, approach the goal full speed, jump and take a smooth shot. That technique of running and jumping helps you get ready for an actual game.

Get good at making free throws. These shots may seem easy, but they can be quite difficult. Practice often using the following technique. Put your weaker hand in front of the ball and center your stronger hand over the air valve in the basketball. Have your eyes on your goal and picture your ball going into it. Bend your knees to control the arc of the ball.

It is important to practice catching the ball from others as much as passing. When you're practicing, you should drill in being able to catch random throws in addition to passes that are perfect. During a game, not all of your passes will hit the mark. Therefore, learn how to catch any type of pass so that you can help lead your team to victory.

Good footwork is essential to escaping coverage and putting yourself in position to take a shot when you are posting up. You always want to beat your opponent to the open spot. After establishing good position, you need to make sure you hold it. Strong footwork is key.

Hand signals can help you to stay away from making bad passes. It is very frustrating when a teammate isn't open for the perfect pass. Hand signals can tell you if your teammate is ready. If you don't see a signal, you shouldn't pass the ball.

If you get injured while playing basketball, do not try to play through the pain. Basketball is hard to play well even when you are healthy, so don't push it. You may injure yourself more if you continue to play with an injury. If you are seriously injured, obtain medical care.

If there's no one around to play with, it is okay to play a basketball game by yourself. You may not always be able to find someone to play with you. Don't fret! It is possible to get a lot done even when playing alone. Work on free throws or three pointers. You can always practice something.

Changing up your pace is something you have to do to make sure the offense is paying attention. When you approach the goal, put your front foot in firm place and start straightening up. The guard may think you've slowed down and may try to straighten themselves. When they do, push ahead hard and outrun them.

Now you should know how to get into basketball even more. As with any sport, getting better takes hard work and a willingness to learn. Begin playing and before you know it, you will be playing every day. You will probably find that playing basketball is a lot of fun.
